Camp Lejeune history exhibit opens in Richlands

ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. — A new exhibit in the Onslow County museum showcases the earliest years of Camp Lejeune starting with the acquisition of land for the base.
Many of the artifacts and photographs have never been on display before. Some of the rarely seen photos show the War Dog program; which trained canines to go into battle with Marines. A large centerpiece of the exhibit shows a 1940's panoramic picture of marines storming beach head.
The museum's director, Lisa Whitman-Grice, said it is important to remember how Camp Lejeune shaped the identity of Onslow County.
"The entire world came here to Onslow County in the 1940's and forever changed this community and impacted the way that we operate; the way that the county functions in every capacity," said Whitman-Grice.
The exhibit is in the rotating gallery at the Onslow County museum until June.
