National Weather Service confirms tornado in Franklin County
The National Weather service said the storm that hit Franklin County Tuesday evening did produce a tornado. It had maximum winds of 85 mph and was on the ground for more than a mile, with an average width of 75 yards and 150 yards at its widest.

Police investigate deadly wreck on Shaw Mill Road in Fayetteville
Fayetteville police say an SUV crossed the center line on Shaw Mill Road, hit a car and overturned onto another car. The driver of the SUV died at the scene. Two people in the second car were airlifted to UNC Hospital. One died on the way.

New federal regulations require truckers to take more breaks
Truck drivers across the country are bracing for new regulations, set to take effect July 1, which require they take more rest periods while on the job. The trucking industry calls the rules unnecessary, even excessive, and say they will hurt profits.

The White House is stepping up its efforts to combat gun violence, with a renewed push to get Congress to pass the expanded background checks the Senate blocked earlier this spring, and the vice president is warning lawmakers who block their efforts that they will face a political backlash.

Military to open more combat positions to women
Women will soon be able to start training for several combat positions in the United States military. The Pentagon announced Tuesday that women will be able to train to become Army Rangers as soon as July 2015 and Navy Seals in March 2016.

NC Senate delays final vote on tax plan
The state Senate tabled a vote on a new tax plan. The bill is being held in hopes of reaching a compromise with the House, before it gets sent back to them. As it stands, the plan would lower individual income tax rates while gradually repealing corporate taxes.

Destructive beetle could take a toll on NC lumber industry
A destructive beetle about the size of a thumb is causing a quarantine on wood used from ash trees in three North Carolina counties. Since there's no way to stop the beetles from spreading to other ash trees, they could take a toll on the state's lumber industry.

Duke Energy named its new president and CEO as Lynn Good on Tuesday. Good was unanimously elected by the company's board of directors. Good has served as Duke Energy's executive vice president and Chief Financial Officer since 2009.

Fayetteville City Council considering elimination of 1 cent property tax increase
The Fayetteville City Council is considering eliminating the proposed one cent property tax increase in their 2013-2014 budget. City Manager Ted Voorhees made the recommendation because of factors that could potentially impact the budget.

UCLA defeats Wolfpack 2-1 at College World Series
Nick Vander Tuig scattered four hits over seven-plus innings and UCLA produced just enough offense to defeat North Carolina State 2-1 in the College World Series on Tuesday night. UCLA (46-17) moved within one victory of next week's best-of-three finals.

North Carolina ousts Tigers from CWS with 4-2 win
Brian Holberton homered, Trent Thornton pitched a strong seven innings and No. 1 national seed North Carolina extended its stay at the College World Series with a 4-2 victory over LSU on Tuesday. The Tar Heels (58-11) play North Carolina State or UCLA in an elimination game Thursday.

NASCAR driver in NC faces new charges
A NASCAR driver has turned himself in to authorities in Shelby after warrants were issued for him and a business partner. Rowan County sheriff's deputies say warrants were issued for Mike Harmon and a business partner on Monday afternoon. The men are charged with breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering.

UNC AD Cunningham mulling upgrades to Smith Center, Fetzer
North Carolina won NCAA championships in women's lacrosse and women's soccer this season, and earned recognition as the nation's best women's athletic program.
