Icy roads cause fender-benders across central NC
(RALEIGH) - Freezing rain caused numerous fender-benders across central North Carolina Saturday, though a delayed start to the foul weather and the light weekend traffic seemed to help keep the number of problems down.
The state Highway Patrol received 308 calls for help in the Triangle area by around 8 p.m., though it was not yet clear how many involved accidents. There had been no reports of serious injuries or fatalities due to the weather.
But emergency workers stayed busy. In Guilford County, sheriff's deputies assisted the state troopers with at least a dozen accidents in the Greensboro-High Point area.
The state Transportation Department reported icy patches on many highways and roads, particularly from the Interstate 40 and US Highway 64 corridor north to the Virginia border.
