'Canes begin training camp with trades, signing

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ The Carolina Hurricanes opened training camp Sunday by making two trades and signing their new backup goalie.

Carolina acquired forward Kevin Westgarth from Los Angeles for forward Anthony Stewart and two draft picks. That came after the Hurricanes sent goalie Brian Boucher and minor league defenseman Mark Alt to Philadelphia for minor league center Luke Pither.

They also signed goalie Dan Ellis to a one-year deal worth a prorated $650,000 this season.

Westgarth was in Raleigh last week skating with some Hurricanes during an informal workout.

Boucher is in the second year of a two-year contract he signed before last season, but injuries limited him to just 10 appearances as Cam Ward's backup. That job now goes to Ellis, a six-year veteran who spent last year with Anaheim.
