Harnett County middle schooler killed in wreck while boarding school bus

COATS—A Harnett County middle school student was hit and killed Thursday in a wreck while trying to board his bus. The incident happened around 7 a.m. on Highway 27 near Coats.

Adam Kempf, 12, of Coats Erwin Middle School was hit and killed when trying to walking to get on his school bus Thursday morining along Highway 27 near Bill Avery Road. He was taken to Betsey Johnson Hospital in Dunn where he died.

Adam Kempf's mother Sharon, and his sister all come out to their front porch every morning to wait for the school bus. His mother said she did not see the car hit her son, but his sister saw the whole incident unfold.

Sharon Kempf said she hopes their story will make more people aware of school bus stops and children loading the bus.

"I am not sure if there is really anything I could have done, unless I took him by the hand and walked him across the street. He was too old for that, you can't always protect them," said Sharon Kempf.

Fernando Ortiz Soto, 43, is who police say was driving the car that hit Adam Kempf. He has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle by passing a stopped school bus. He was also charged with driving without a license.

There were 25 students on board the bus at the time of the incident. Grief counselors were on hand at the school to provide support.
