CHARLOTTE -- Carolina Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney is no longer with the team.
Team owner Jerry Richardson announced Monday morning that Hurney has been relieved of his duties. Hurney has been with the team since 2002.
The departure comes less than 24 hours after the Panthers lost to the Dallas Cowboys Sunday and are now 1-5 for the season. The timing of the decision leads to raised eyebrows being it mid-season, however a lot of finger pointing by frustrated fans may have been the final result.
In a statement, Richardson said:
This was an extremely difficult decision. Marty made every effort to bring success to the panthers and took the team to a Super Bowl and NFC championship games. Unfortunately, we have not enjoyed the success we hoped for in recent years. I have the greatest respect and admiration for Marty and will always appreciate the way he tirelessly served the organization.
