HIGH POINT--It's a proud moment for many families, when they see a tradition carried on.

“My grandfather was in it. He spent 14 years in the unit I'm in right now,” Sgt. William Taylor said.

"My cousin is actually in Afghanistan. It's a big family thing," Spc. Tanner Denney said.

But the same reason these men joined the National Guard is also one of their greater struggles.

"The biggest thing is getting used to being with the guys and being away from your family...being gone for a whole year can be frustrating at times, but your unit really becomes your family so that definitely helps out a lot," Taylor said.

On Saturday, 80 soldiers were deployed to Egypt from the North Carolina National Guard in High Point. They are part of nearly 500 across the state that will all work on a peace-keeping mission for the next year.

It's Spc. Denney's first deployment.

"I'm kinda nervous. It's a new experience and everything, but I'm excited. I'm going with a good group of people. I trust everyone I'm going with. We've really bonded over the past couple months together," Denny said.

He has mixed emotions that his family feels too.

"We're excited for him but we're also kinda scared. We don't know what to expect, but we'll definitely be praying for him. We're definitely really proud of him," Spc. Denney's brother, Tyler Denney said.

Before heading to Egypt for about a year, the troops will stop in Indiana for more training.
