RALEIGH -- The railroad route connecting Raleigh to Charlotte had the biggest growth of any Amtrak service in the country. The Piedmont route is owned by the NC Department of Transportation, and DOT officials say it carried more than 160,000 riders in the past year, which is up 16 percent from the year before.

The Piedmont makes two round trips between Raleigh and Charlotte each day, stopping at several North Carolina cities along the way.
