FARMVILLE, N.C. -- One of the suspects charged with killing three people during a robbery at a Farmville convenience store is now accused of plotting to kill Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks, his wife and a prosecutor's child.
Willie Odell Whitehead, Jr., 24, now faces charges of solicitation to commit first-degree murder and solicitation to commit first-degree kidnapping.
The investigation determined whitehead had developed the plot to kidnap and kill the three in order to gain his freedom from jail.
Whitehead communicated his plans to other inmates and people he interacted with outside the facility and one of those people told investigators.
Whitehead's bond is set at $5 million on the new charges
Eight people total are charged in the April 1 robbery and shooting at the family-owned Hustle Mart Convenience Store.
The last person arrested was Willie Whitehead's brother.
