SPRING LAKE, N.C. — A mobile home fire in Spring Lake destroyed the home of three families.

Fire investigators are not sure how about the cause of the fire. No one was injured and the family was not home at the time of the incident. Anthony Nivens and his family are still in shock after their home was destroyed Monday night.

"We prayed almost all night, talked to the kids and let them know what was going on and eventually they went to sleep,” said Nivens.

Nivens, his wife, and four children were put in a hotel for the night due to the efforts of the American Red Cross. Nivens and his family along with two other families all lived inside this mobile home. Six adults and nine children are now without a permanent place to call home.

"Every memory you have taken, all of the photos, all of the gifts you have received, are completely gone. Your clothes are gone, your food is gone, it is literally one of the worst days of your life,” said American Red Cross spokesperson Dawne Sezawich.

The fire happened shortly after 8 p.m. Monday. The family was at church not too far from their home. A nearby neighbor saw the flames and called 911 and then alerted the families.

"It was a wreck because with the children there and everything, that is the only thing we were worried about to make sure that no one was in the house,” said neighbor Dee Graham.

Fire crews are telling the residents they are unable to determine how the fire started at this time, and residents say it is the unknown that bothers them the most.

"It is terrible. It's horrifying, you never know. Say we get a new home, it's going to be hard to get that comfortable in a house or a home, knowing that your previous house burnt down and you don't know what the cause was,” said Nivens.

The American Red Cross has provided all three families with a hotel to stay in as well as money for food and clothing.
