CONCORD--The Bank of America 500 Sprint Cup race was held at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Saturday and while tens of thousands of people normally pour in, race fans said attendance was down this year.

The crowd picked up later in the evening Saturday, but fans said it still didn't compare to last year.

"It's usually just campers everywhere! We drove in on Friday and we noticed the same thing, there's no campers anywhere," said Corey Taylor.

Wendell Pickney came to Charlotte from Washington D.C. He said going to the Sprint Cup race is how he spends his vacation every year and he said he quickly noticed attendance was down.

"We used to park at the first in first out lot and it was so much traffic the buses couldn't even take you back but they can pick you up and bring you back down there. Where is everybody," said Pickney.

For some fans, there is one reason.

"We were on the road all day yesterday coming down here and we bought some tickets on the street. That guy said that Jr. wasn't running today and he said he thought attendance was way down," said Stephen Bailey.

But Talladega saw a similar turn out last weekend. Officials said 88,000 people watched the race in person. That's the smallest number of spectators for a Sprint Cup race there since numbers started being counted.

For Taylor, the Bank of America 500 has become a tradition. He said the smaller crowd won't keep his group away.

"We're going to be here next year just like we were last year," said Taylor.

As for the Talladega numbers, that is 20,000 less people than the race held earlier in the year. The numbers for the race at Charlotte Motor Speedway should be released in the next couple of days.
