RALEIGH--A church music director arrested for rape made his first appearance in court Friday.

John Wright, 31, was charged with statutory rape of a 14-year-old and giving the girl alcohol.

Wright works at the Body of Christ Church in north Raleigh.

The pastor at the church would not comment on the incident, but said it did not happen at the church and its unclear if the victim was part of the church community.

The maximum punishment for the crimes he's accused of is life without parole.

Wright asked the judge to reduce his half-million dollar bond, but that request was denied.
