RALEIGH -- Friday, NC State's all-time great athletes and coaches will be inducted into the university's athletic hall of fame. The inaugural class includes seven accomplished athletes and three celebrated coaches.

As NC State celebrates its 125th anniversary, the best of the best will be honored at Reynolds Coliseum Friday night. The first ever hall of fame class includes 10 legendary players and coaches including Jimmy V and Kay Yow.

The idea all got started with one vision.

"I realized we didn't have an athletic hall of fame, which struck me as kind of odd," said NC State Athletic Director Debbie Yow.

Two years ago, Yow felt there needed to be a place to honor NC State's legends; legends like her older sister and women's basketball coach Kay Yow, who died in 2009.

"It's very poetic for me to see Kay be inducted," said Yow. "My younger sister Susan will be accepting on her behalf and Susan was our first All American in any women's sport at NC State so that's going to be a lot of fun as well."

Men's basketball coach Jim Valvano will also be honored. He helped lead the Wolfpack to the 1983 national championship. He's also dedicated his life to helping find a cure for cancer. Now, the Jimmy V Classic raises millions of dollars every year for the cause.

Some of best players ever to represent the Wolfpack will also be honored including basketball great David Thompson football legend Roman Gabriel and long distance runner Julie Shea.

News 14 Carolina will be there along with hundreds of others later Friday when the celebration begins at 7:30 p.m.
