BELMONT, N.C. -- All three Gaston County high school stadiums that were condemned a few month ago hosted home games Friday night as the 2012 football season officially kicked off.

The stands were deemed unsafe at Cherryville, East Gaston and South Point high schools at the end of last school year, and some fans feared they may not be watching on opening night.

Kevin Muse was happy to see the stands open. He claimed more than a dozen seats at South Point so his whole family could watch his son, Tanner, a sophomore, play in his first varsity game.

“I thought they'd have to tear them down,” he said. “Can they just refurbish them or restructure them? Will they be ready for tonight, for opening night?”

There is still plenty of work to be done at South Point. Both stands are open, and what's not finished – like the concession stand – is closed off.

Muse couldn't care less about the stacks of construction material lying around. His eyes were fixed to the field.

Gaston County school officials say it cost the district more than $4 million to make repairs to all stadiums.
