WILSON COUNTY — Thousands of school kids in Wilson County will be getting the tools they need to learn even if their families can not afford them.
Wilson County schools is hosting a back-to-school fair where school officials give away more than 2,000 backpacks. The backpacks are filled with notebooks, rulers, pens and crayons and teachers say this goes beyond making the education process possible.
"We're also helping our teachers because so often when kids come to the classroom and they're not ready to work, teachers pull it out of their pockets to provide supplies,” said Martha Vick with the Wilson Education Partnership.
The project is the brainchild of Wilson County Superintendent Sean Bulson. Bulson said he is thrilled to have so much support from the community.
"This community was ready for this and you can just tell by what we ended up with. They're really here to support us and that's just been great," said Bulson.
The back-to-school fair is taking place at Jones Elementary School in Wilson at 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. Saturday.
