FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. -- If you've driven down Broad Street, you can't miss it.
"It is a landmark. People know it's here. They know they can run over and get what they need and finish their projects at home. It's convenient," said Holly Springs resident Claire Rousseau.
Convenient for shoppers like Rae West. For the last six years she's always felt comfortable stopping in at Stephen's Hardware.
"I believe in patronizing the family businesses as much as you can. I mean if it's a big difference in price that's one thing. But if it's just a little bit I'd prefer to keep the family businesses going," said West.
But the hardware store won't be open much longer. The owners have decided to close up shop. For owner Wray Stephens, it will be hard to see the store his father Isaac founded close down.
"I was the one who took an interest in the business when he decided he was going to retire. I chose to come here and I spent 25 years here. I never regretted it. I love the hardware business in particular. Love the customers," said Stephens.
And the customers love the store that has been with the town ever since the 1930s. Which makes this week's going out of business sale a little tough to handle.
"It's sad for the community to lose an old familiar neighborhood store," said Holly Springs resident Claire Rousseau.
"There's a place for this kind of business in every community. One day the time will be right for someone to put a hardware store back in Fuquay," said Stephens.
