FAYETTEVILLE -- The suspected gunman in the Sikh temple shooting in Wisconsin has close ties to North Carolina.

From 1992 to 1998, Wade Michael Page was a specialist in the Army's psychological operations. He served part of that time at Fort Bragg, and despite winning a few awards, was less than honorably discharged due to behavioral issues.

Those issues spilled into his personal life as well. He pleaded guilty to writing a bad check in Cumberland County in 1997 and he was later charged with DWI in Harnett County in 2010.

In 2007, he purchased a home off Doc Bennett Road in the Gray's Creek area of Cumberland County. That home is now abandoned and has been foreclosed.

In 2008, Page applied for and was granted a permit to purchase up to five handguns, also in Cumberland County.

A troubling and dangerous part of his past is linked to North Carolina as well. The Southern Poverty Law Center says Page was part of a few white supremacist 'hate rock' groups.

One of those groups, End Apathy, listed Nashville, N.C., as their home on their MySpace page.

"This man has been in the thick of the white supremacist scene in this country for a good dozen years now. We've been tracking him for over 10 years. He has played in some of the most infamous white supremacist rock and roll bands in this country," says Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
