SPRING LAKE, N.C.--People across the world sacrificed their bodies Saturday to honor 31 soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The fitness company CrossFit held its 2nd Annual 31 Heroes Project to honor the 30 men and one military dog who who lost their lives in a Chinook helicopter crash on August 6, 2011.

“If this is the way I can give my sacrifice, sweat cry bleed for these men, I'm happy to do it,” said Brian Tatum, trainer at CrossFit Fort Bragg

The numbers, for the 31 minutes represented the individuals on the helicopter, and the rep scheme was for August 6, 2011.

It was the deadliest single incident in the Afghanistan War, and one of the greatest losses ever suffered by the U.S. Special Operations community.

The event has special significance in such a military-friendly state.

“That's my way of giving back, it's such a small piece, it's not going to replace these lives, and make it all go away, but to honor that and live for that legacy,” said athlete Emily Adams.

Though they know it won't bring our lost soldiers back, the athletes say it's important just to remember.
