Sally Ride, first American woman in space, dies at 61

The first American female to fly in space has died. Sally Ride died Monday of pancreatic cancer.

Ride traveled into space on the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1983 when she was 32.

President Barack Obama said she was a “powerful role model who inspired generations of young girls.”

Ride was 61 years old.
