JORDAN LAKE, N.C. -- For some kids there is no better place to be in the summer time than in the water.

"They probably would be all right to swim unsupervised. Keeping an eye on them was always a good idea," said Archer Lodge resident Greg Gaines.

At Jordan Lake, park rangers are always keeping an eye on all swimmers. From promoting water safety to having life jackets handy the safety measures haven't gone unnoticed.

"It's very good conditions here and it's pretty safe as I feel so this place is actually very good for kids," said Durham resident Kate Poutrina. "In addition to the life jackets and signs there is also a yellow line that serves as a safety boundary for swimmers."

"If you go outside of the yellow line you could get hit by a boat. You could get exhausted get too tired and drown," said Stephen Harrison with the US Army Corps of Engineers.

And drowning is what rangers want to avoid on Jordan Lake this summer. So far they've been successful.

"We've been very fortunate not to have a lot of emergency response situations. And again I think that's just through having visibility in the park. Showing our presence," said North Carolina State Park Ranger Brock Martin.

If Sunday was any indication many swimmers are taking full advantage of the available life jackets, officials hope to keep everyone safe while they enjoy some fun in the sun.
