RALEIGH--The Triangle Transit Authority is giving its new initiative to bypass traffic jams a test drive on Monday.
TTA is launching the "Bus on Shoulder System" or "BOSS" program, which will allow buses to use the shoulder lane along portions of I-40 during rush hour.
This system is the first of its kind in North Carolina and officials said it's a way to make sure bus commuters get to their destination on time.
"We won't have to take detours like we normally do. We can just take the shoulders. It will be more efficient using the shoulders than detouring around," said bus operator Larry Villines.
Buses will be able to use the shoulder only when traffic on the highway falls below 35 mph.
