FAYETTEVILLE — The soldier accused of fatally shooting his superior officer during a safety briefing on Fort Bragg has died.

According to the Fayetteville Observer, Spc. Ricky Elder, 27, died Saturday at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Authorities say he shot and killed Lt. Col. Roy Tisdale and wounded one other soldier during a safety briefing Thursday, before Elder turned the gun on himself.

The third soldier has been identified as 22-year-old Spc. Michael Latham. He was treated and released from Womack Army Medical Center. All three soldiers were stationed in the 525 Battlefield Surveillance Brigade.

Spc. Elder was facing a Court Martial for stealing a toolkit from Fort Bragg and had a pending charge for assaulting a woman in his hometown in Kansas.

There is currently no information on a motive in the shooting.
