RALEIGH — The federal government spends $4 million to help low income families buy farm fresh food.

Currently, fewer than a quarter of the more than 7,000 farmers markets across the country are set up to use the electronic benefit transfer system, or food stamps. The grants could help buy equipment for thousands of additional locations.

Only four vendors at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh accept EBT cards. North Carolina is set to receive more than $100,000.
