RALEIGH — State Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler outlined his plans to rebound from a disappointing year at his State of Agriculture address Thursday.
It was part of the seventh annual Agricultural Development Forum at the N.C. State Fairgrounds. Troxler spoke about the factors that hurt the industry last year and how to avoid the same problems next year.
He also emphasized the aging workforce in the farming industry and how they need to prepare for the future.
"If you look at the color of my hair, this is the color of the hair of most of the farmers we have in this state, some 57, 58-years-old. So not only do we have to concentrate on the natural resources we're going to have to have, we have to concentrate on the human resources we're going to have to have and bring young people into agriculture," said Troxler.
Economists Mike Walden and Blake Brown also spoke at the event, outlining the market trends to look out for in the coming year.
