DURHAM—Durham's district attorney, Tracey Cline, is temporarily off the job.

Friday afternoon, a judge suspended Cline following complaints her actions were: "prejudicial to the administration of justice..." and "brings the office of the district attorney into disrepute."

The judge suspended her with pay, for two weeks, after which he will hold a hearing on whether or not to permanently remove her from office. That hearing is set for Feb. 13.

Former prosecutor, now defense attorney Karl Knudsen is not associated with the case against Cline, however provided some insight into the proceedings.

“This is a fight she's brought on herself. She's made unprecedented and vehement accusations against one of the most respected superior court judges on the bench,” said Knudsen.

Over the past few months, Cline has been in a very public battle with Superior Court judge Orlando Hudson, asking him to recuse himself from cases, even asking that he be removed from the bench, saying his rulings are prejudicial against her personally.

Other judges have dismissed her requests and accusations. Now, another judge will decide if line's aggressive pursuit of justice has gone too far.

“The office of the district attorney requires not only an aggressive pursuit of punishment of those who are guilty, but also an understanding of the law and the ability to recognize there are limits within the law and she apparently is having a great deal of difficulty with understanding where those limits are,” said Knudsen.

All along, Cline has denied any wrongdoing. Voters elected her to a four-year term in 2010. No one ran against her. The last time a person filed to remove a district attorney was in 2006, against former prosecutor Mike Nifong during the Duke lacrosse case controversy in 2006.
