CHARLOTTE – Former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory is expected to formally announce his candidacy for governor on Tuesday. His campaign said he will unveil his bid with an Internet announcement to be followed by a speech in Guilford County.

McCrory is scheduled to campaign next week in Hendersonville, Wilmington and New Bern.

Pat McCrory's race to the Governor's mansion may be a bit more challenging with Bev Perdue's announcement that she will not seek re-election. Political experts said McCrory had a good chance running against Perdue, but now he will have to change his campaign.

"Getting the base mad at Perdue would probably be a great strategy,” said. “Getting the base mad at democrats in general gets harder if there is a popular democrat," said UNC Charlotte Associate Professor, Martha Kropf.

Kropf said McCrory will have to deliver a slightly different message.

"Bringing in a new candidate for the democrats is smart, especially if they can find some candidate associated with positive growth or positive outlook for the state,” said Kropf. “Then it becomes a little bit more challenging for McCrory to run."

McCrory is scheduled to campaign next week in Hendersonville, Wilmington and New Bern.

"At the end of the day people of this state are not going to be fooled by hiding behind another person,” said North Carolina Republican Party Vice-Chair, Wayne King.

McCrory Statement

"My message has been and will continue to be that we must fix our broken government and broken economy and put our North Carolina resources back to work. That's why next week I plan to announce my intentions to seek the honor of serving as North Carolina's next Governor."
