GREENVILLE, N.C. -- A lockdown has been lifted at East Carolina University. It ended shortly before 1 p.m. after ECU Officials determined that the situation had ended and that there was no threat to campus. It appears a student carrying an umbrella in his backpack caused the lockdown.

The man was caught on a traffic camera as he crossed the street near campus and police responded.

"We are relieved that the reports of this incident turned out to be unfounded," Chancellor Steve Ballard said in a statement. "East Carolina University will always err on the side of campus safety when these situations arise. Our response by faculty, staff, and students was timely and professional."

The situation began shortly after 10 a.m. when there reports of a gunman near campus. The alert posted on the ECU website said people should take shelter inside a building, close and secure doors.

Students said, as stressful as the day was, they felt like they were safe.

"All the teachers were well prepared for a situation like that and we had gates at Brewster so they locked the gates so nobody could come up the gates or anything. So I felt pretty safe the entire time," said student Martin Lee.

Police said even though the event turned out to be a false alarm, they urge people to call with information like this in the future.
