RALEIGH—Middle and High School students received financial tips on how to avoid debt on Saturday.

The Making Cents program featured presentations by Certified Public Accountants. Parents, students and teachers discussed student loans, credit card debt and ways to save money and plan for the future.

"If we teach them these things now then later on they're not going to get in financial trouble. And maybe their parents aren't even aware of what to teach them and what to keep them away from. Maybe their parents aren't even aware of what to teach them and what to keep them away from. Maybe their parents don't know that they're going to be flooded with credit card offers when they start college," said Financial Literacy Council Ashley Khan.

A recent study shows more than 90 percent of college students have at least one credit card. The average senior will graduate college with more than $4,000 in credit card debt and more than 7 percent of college students will drop out of school because of debt.
