CHARLOTTE – The explosive Showtime series “Homeland,” which is filmed in the Charlotte region is coming back for another season. Showtime announced it will keep the spy thriller for another season Wednesday.

The show's stars Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and Mandy Patinkin are often seen in many parts of Charlotte filming the show.

Homeland is Showtime's highest rated first year drama, drawing 4.5 million viewers in its debut.

North Carolina Film Commission leaders said Homeland and its close to 500 workers have also helped the state rack up a record year in film and television production profits.

"This will be our biggest year probably ever in North Carolina,” said Aaron Syrett, of the N.C. Film Commission. “To date, we've had direct spending of more than $200 million in the state, up from last $73 million last year."

Production of Homeland's second season begins next spring.
