RALEIGH -- Committees at the North Carolina Legislature have made quick work recommending new boundaries for General Assembly districts and the state's congressional seats.

The House and Senate redistricting committees approved Friday three sets of maps, foregoing the need of a previously scheduled day of debate on Saturday. Floor debate for some of all of the maps could come Monday as all lawmakers return to Raleigh for a week of work.

Republicans in the majority in both legislative chambers voted for the maps. Democrats voted no.

The two parties disagree on how the districts are drawn to comply with the federal Voting Rights Act. Democrats say Republicans drew too many majority-black districts and actually
reduce the overall influence of black voters.

Republicans call the maps fair and legal and would deter litigation.
