WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — There is a traffic alert for drivers in southern Wake County.
U.S. Highway 1 between Highway 55 and New Hill Holleman Road will be reduced to one lane throughout the day Monday. Neighbors have already complained at recent public meetings about the noise coming from construction sites.
"I feel like that's going on be a hassle, and a waste of gas because i'll have to stop a lot for traffic," said resident Landon Adams.
N.C. Turnpike Authority official Jason Peterson stresses that Adams and other nearby residents need to be patient as crews do their job.
"Please bare with us. We've got a freeway to build. We're doing it as efficiently as we can and as safely as we can,” said Peterson.
The Western Wake Freeway is part of the more than 18 mile stretch of the Triangle Expressway, North Carolina's first modern toll road. It has been under construction for several years, so drivers in our area are no strangers to roads lined with traffic barrels.
"First time folks in North Carolina will have to pay to be on a road. But, we hope it offers convenience and consistent travel through that area,” said Peterson.
The Triangle Expressway Project cost more than $1 billion and is the single largest transportation infrastructure project in North Carolina history. The whole road will be complete in December 2012.
