FAYETTEVILLE -- Residents will get another chance Wednesday to voice their opinions on a rental registration program. The program would aim to track landlords in Fayetteville to make it easier to crack down on code violations through the city.

With roughly 40 percent of Fayetteville's houses being rental properties, the city is focusing on ensuring those homes don't fall into disrepair. That's why the city is considering a program that would require property owners to register with the city and pay a fee. The fees would pay for staffing to enforce code violations and a computer system to track the rental properties.

Wednesday, the city holds the second of two public input sessions to find out what folks in the city think.

The city says citizens have requested a better process to make landlords more accountable for their properties and to help tenants resolve a wide range of issues involving deteriorating properties and criminal and drug activity. Some rental property managers have expressed concern that slum landlords won't register their properties, so the only people affected will be the ones who were already following the rules.

Assistant City Manager Doug Hewett said last month that the city understands that concern. "This is a business for the people who own the rental property," he said.We don't want to do anything that is overly onerous, but we also have a responsibility to ensure the livability in the community."

Wednesday's meeting is at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
