RALEIGH – Raleigh's city council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday expressing concern over any attempt to resegregate Wake County public schools.

Wake County commissioners passed the same resolution Monday.

City and county leaders fear the school board's plans to end the diversity policy in favor of community schools will resegregate schools and have a negative economic impact on the area.

“We have an outstanding school system, nationally recognized,” Mayor Charles Meeker said. “Its reputation has already been damaged. I hear that from people all over the country. We need to stand up and be counted to oppose this and be sure we do whatever we can to be sure every student in Raleigh and Wake County has a fair chance at a really good education, not to go back to something that didn't work before.”

The new majority on the school board insists eliminating the student diversity policy will not resegregate the schools. County commissioners and the board of education will hold a joint meeting Tuesday.
