GREENSBORO – It's been 20 years since Reading Connections began teaching basic literacy skills to people throughout the county, and the program is hoping for another 20 years with the help of the community.
Volunteers are asked to give an hour and a half of their time on any day that they choose.
If you would like to become a volunteer, or if you want to sign up for any of the free classes, just call (336)230-2223 or (336)883-3664.
Rhiannon Kelly, volunteer coordinator with Reading Connections, says the program features one-on-one sessions as well as small group sessions, all in the hopes of improving the literacy of people who live and work in Guilford County.
"Not only will that person better their lives, but the lives of those around them, but their family, their friends, their co-workers," Kelly said.
She said the program has resulted in countless success stories.
"We have students who have passed their GED, who have gotten jobs and their lives have become more fulfilled and better because they've been able to improve their literacy skills," said Kelly.
But she said there could be more progress with more participation.
"We have over 100 folks right now waiting. They are waiting for a tutor for a small group," said Kelly.
That's why program leaders are hoping people will sacrifice a little bit of time to help those who are willing to help themselves.
