GARNER, N.C. – Residents in Garner came together Thursday in an attempt to keep the doors at the local library open. One money-saving proposal from the county's library system includes shutting down the Southeast Regional Library.
The county is facing a multimillion dollar deficit, and county leaders asked officials with the library system to help make up the difference by finding ways to cut seven percent from their budget.
While the system has come up with several proposals to trip more than $1 million from the budget, the decision in the end rests with county commissioners.
“We try to put the proposal out early so that people can look at other options, and I am hopeful they will find other ways to finance the deficit,” Michael Wasilick, of Wake County Libraries, said.
In response, Garner leaders organized residents. It was standing room only at First Presbyterian Church during a meeting held Thursday night to discuss ways of convincing the county to keep the library open.
“We are going to circulate more petitions, increase the number of e-mails and letter writing campaign and whatever they come up with tonight. We want the county folks to tell us they are tired of seeing us and we are going to save our library,” Garner Mayor Ronnie Williams said.
More than 2,000 people have signed up for the Facebook group in support of the library.
