MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. – A Mecklenburg County family was displaced by their Steele Creek area home just a week before Christmas due to a house fire. Charlotte fire officials say the house would have been a total loss if not for a station serving that remote area.

No one was injured, but firefighters were unable to locate one of the family's cats.

The first truck on the scene was from Station 38 in the Steele Creek area. The city of Charlotte built that station last year in what's actually considered to be part of the county. Firefighters say the city plans to annex the area.

Fire officials say having a station in that area is vital, and they've been able to respond to 31 structure fires out of that station.

Investigators don't yet know what caused the fire, but they say the heaviest damage appears to be in the attic and second floor.
