CHARLOTTE -- Nonprofits in North Carolina are benefiting from a major facelift at Fort Bragg, as the Charlotte-based company hired to haul away thousands of pieces of old furniture and appliances from the military instillation have donated the items to various organizations.

For now, the Lighthouse Baptist Church gym has been temporarily converted to a makeshift furniture warehouse as church members work to ensure the items make it to the needy in Stanly County. Terry Page, a church member, says the new area homeless shelter has already been by to claim some items.

"I hope every bit of this is gone by Christmas -- because I want it to help someone before Christmas," said Page. “We've got refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, chairs.

“You look at it and say: ‘What is it; where did it come from?’ And I say it's God's gift to ones in need."

Behind the giving is the Linda Construction Company, which has been hauling the items away from Fort Bragg for weeks, storing them and then delivering it all by the tractor load to organizations who can give them to a good home.

"So we got on the phone to the local nonprofits in the area, started calling around and said: ‘Can you use this? How much do you want?’” explained Gary Olnowich, vice president of Linda Construction Co. “And we found the demand was amazing."

Olnowich says the Army chose his company because they’re known for doing environmentally friendly projects. He added that they could have salvaged the pieces for scrap, but feel much better knowing they’re going to the needy in the area.

"Winter's coming up -- a lot of kids sleeping on floors -- we want to get them off the floors and do what we can do to help the community and at the same time keep our bottom line reasonable.”
