DURHAM -- The Duke women's basketball team began practices in preparation for their European tour, which begins Aug. 13.

The team will play games in France, get a tour of the Normandy landing beaches and then wrap the trip up in Italy. While this trip will help the team prepare for the coming season, it also allows coach Joanne P. McCallie to back up her words once spoken to a recruit.

“It fulfills a promise to Allison Vernerey when we recruited her that we'd really like to take her home,” she said.

The 6-foot-5 center is entering her senior season at Duke.
