CHARLOTTE -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg School officials met privately with parents and students Tuesday night at Harding University High School in the wake of recent incidents at the school.
The art gallery crawl was slated from 6 - 8 p.m. and the Board of Education Chairman Eric Davis spoke to attendees.
Dee Peterson has a grandson who attends Harding. She said she saw in the newspaper that she'd be able to ask questions of CMS administrators.
"I would've preferred that they had done a call, that they had sent a memo home or an email to my house, because they have all that information," Peterson said.
Harding was locked down on Oct. 26 and searched after administrators said they got wind of potential threats.
Last Tuesday, CMS Police said vandals sprayed graffiti on school property. It said "R.I.P Harding" with a specific date.
"Considering everything that's gone on and they're talking about a bomb threat on the Seventeenth, I think it's needed. We need to know that our children are safe," said Peterson.
She showed up hoping to get some of her questions answered.
"This used to be a great school. You never had any problems out here. And ever since school opened in August, I've seen nothing up here except TV cameras and police cars."
The event was not open to the public or the news media.
"This is not a media event," said CMS Police Chief Bud Cessina before instructing media to leave the Harding High parking lot.
Shortly after the event began, CMS Media Relations officials began tweeting on the internet about what was occurring inside.
Seventeen messages were "tweeted," including comments made by Principal Alicisa Johnson and Chairman Davis.
According to the CMS tweets, Johnson said, "Over the summer, staff reviewed each student file, staff from Waddell was hired, election and try-out times were extended."
She also reportedly said, "Community relations committee and Parent University providing support."
Chairman Davis said he supports Johnson and vowed to "keep coming to Harding to see you get what you need."
He reportedly added: "Disruptive students will not be tolerated."
Interim Superintendent Hugh Hattabaugh is scheduled to hold a news conference Thursday morning to address the recent issues at Harding.
