DURHAM — Governor Bev Perdue launched her new education initiative Thursday at Hillside High School in Durham.
The College and Career Promise would allow students to enroll in community college courses for free while in high school. Students will have to choose one of three tracks, keep a high grade point average and show they are learning basic skills.
Governor Perdue said this is an important step for students across the state.
"We understand for North Carolina to compete effectively in the global economy, that our high school students have to graduate either prepared for a career or go on directly into further career or college training. The world where you can drop out of high school and succeed in life is over," said Gov. Perdue
The governor also scheduled events Thursday to announce the initiative in Greensboro and Charlotte.
