RALEIGH — Questions remain as Wake County Schools moves forward with the new Student Assignment Plan. Superintendent Tony Tata hopes parents get answers through a new website launched this week.

Parents have waited all week to log on to get answers. Parent Jennifer Jones of Raleigh is not sure how the new Student Assignment Plan will affect where her kids go to school next year.

"I think they call it 'grandfathered in'? But it's not 100 percent,” said Jones.

However, Tata said it is 100 percent that Jones' children will be grandfathered into their current school for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year. He hopes the new website that got up and running Friday will help clear up confusion.

"If you're in your school and you like your school, you just stay there,” said Tata.

Only the parents of the estimated 12,000 new Kindergartners or students new to the county will use the choice plan for the coming year. When they plug in their address, they will be given a list of five nearby elementary schools with at least two year-round school options and two traditional calendar options.

Parents can also choose to attend one of the magnet schools. Based on that choice, students then graduate on to a pre-assigned middle and high school. School leaders emphasize this is just a preview. It is not part of the actual selection process. In January when selection begins, it will be more detailed.

"We want parents to be putting their child in a school that best suits them. That's really what a lot of this choice plan is all about,” said Tata.

Parents will receive their child's initial assignment the week of Nov. 14. They can begin applying for magnet schools in early December.
