CARY, N.C. -- Starting Monday, parents can find out which Wake County schools will be available to their child. It's part of the process for the new assignment plan the school board approved last week. The plan allows a family to pick a school from a list of choices instead of being automatically assigned to one.

The new student assignment plan offers parents a selection of schools near their home to choose from, and Monday, parents can begin considering where they want their child to attend school.

Based on their address, Wake County families will be given a list of five nearby elementary schools with at least two year-round school options and two traditional calendar options. They can also choose to attend one of the magnet schools. Based on parents choice, students then graduate on to a pre-assigned middle and high school.

Superintendent Tony Tata said the lists should be easy for parents to access and navigate through.

"[There's] a set of choices based on proximity to their elementary school," he said. "Essentially what it is is a reflection of the feeder patterns that are in hard copy in the plan on the website now."

Parents who like their child's current school won't have to make any changes and their child can stay put. It's a plan Tata believes will work for most families.

"We have developed a plan that accommodates growth and follows board policy, while giving parents choices and provides access to high quality programs," he said.

The plan takes effect next school year..
