RALEIGH – It looks like a runoff will decide control of the Wake County School Board. Democratic-backed incumbent Kevin Hill won nearly 50 percent of the District 3 vote on election night but fell just short of the clear majority needed to avoid a runoff with Republican-backed challenger Heather Losurdo.

Hill picked up a few extra votes Monday as officials counted provisional and absentee ballots but not enough to avoid the runoff.

With the new board currently split at four Democrats and four Republicans, the District 3 race is sure to draw a lot of attention.

Elections staff already have a ballot in place, since there's not much time to spare.

"The board certifies the election Tuesday at 11 [a.m.] but early voting for the election starts Thursday morning,” said Wake County Elections Director Cherie Poucher. “So, we want a guarantee that on Thursday morning, we're set for every single contest."

Along with the runoff in school board District 3, early voting for other municipal races around Wake County also starts Thursday.
