RALEIGH -- Candidates opposed to the current Wake County school board majority have won big in local elections as voters in the state's largest school district rendered their verdict on two years of major change.

With all precincts reporting Tuesday night, Democratic-aligned candidates were top vote getters in all five school board races. The narrowest contest involved school board Chairman Ron Margiotta. Preliminary results showed him narrowly losing to challenger Susan Evans by about 4 percentage points.

A runoff election was probable in one race, where incumbent Kevin Hill narrowly failed to cross the 50 percent threshold needed to win outright.

The current board has been embroiled in a debate over race and diversity in schools ever since the majority voted to abandon a decade-old student assignment plan.
