RALEIGH—Republican lawmakers said they will fight an action by Gov. Perdue regarding the state's pre-Kindergarten program.
Perdue issued an executive order Wednesday directing the Department of Health and Human Services to accept all eligible at-risk children who apply for the North Carolina Pre-K program, formerly known as More at Four program.
In July, a judge ruled that budget cuts by the republican-controlled legislature are unconstitutional and that the state could not turn away at-risk children. Republicans said the governor doesn't have the authority to override their decision.
Constitutional experts believe the issue will likely be decided in court.
