CHARLOTTE – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board met for four hours Tuesday trying to form its plan of attack on how to go about hiring a new superintendent.

Peter Gorman announced in June he would step down as superintendent

When you get past the technical jargon and the discussion about policy and process, the method of hiring a new school chief looks remarkably similar to the process used about five years ago when Gorman was hired.

Board members are compiling a list of attributes they want in a superintendent and they want to solicit input from the public – how to do that is yet to be determined.

"When it gets down to the decision, it's a matter of the degree of trust and confidence that we have in the individual backed up by the firm," said school board chairman Eric Davis.

CMS staff says they've already been contacted by firms that want to run the search. The board plans to have about a dozen search firms in the running, before whittling it down to three or four finalists.

The board says it is open to firms that might be local, might be smaller and those that might not have a lot of experience in hiring superintendents.

Hugh Hattabaugh, who is serving as interim superintendent, has said he is not in the running for the permanent position.
