RALEIGH—A new state law eliminates the cap on the number of charter schools in North Carolina.
Now the State Board of Education is working to decide how it will determine how to expand the current charter school system. The Board is considering creating an advisory council which would go through the anticipated high number of applications.
Charter school advocates say they hope this does not slow down the process, but agree there needs to be some sort of screening.
“The 1996 law said the state board shall issue those charters if they fill out the paperwork and a little bit more than that. This law they changed that shall to may, we think that's a good thing because we want this council to have discretion and be judicious and we want quality in those applications,” said Eddie Goodall, a spokesperson for the N.C. Alliance for Public Charter Schools.
The Board indicated it would take up the charter school council issue again at its next meeting in August.
