RALEIGH -- About 30 new state laws will go into effect Friday. They include the new budget, an overhaul of the state public safety system through the Justice Reinvestment Act and several new education laws, including the removal of the cap on the number of charter schools and the end of some end of course tests.

"I have received mixed reactions from educators," said June Atkinson, the superintendent of public instruction. "I have heard principals say, 'how are we going to determine how well our students are doing in comparison to other students across the state?' I've also heard some principals and teachers say to me, 'I am glad we no longer have these tests.'"

Hundreds of other new laws were approved during this year's legislative session and will go into effect throughout the year.
