CHARLOTTE – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board has named Hugh Hattabaugh as interim superintendent Tuesday evening.

Hattabaugh, the district's chief operating officer since 2008, will take over July 1 and serve a year. He replaces on a Doctor Peter Gorman, who announced his resignation earlier this month after five years on the job.

School board members and Hattabaugh agreed he will not seek the permanent superintendent position but will have to continue the district's academic momentum and offer steady consistent leadership.

"You know things are going to be done and they're going to be done well and he's going to be thoughtful on how he leads the district,” said CMS Board Chairman Eric Davis.

"There's not going to be a sea change in the tenure of an interim, especially in a election year,” said CMS Board member Trent Merchant. “So, I don't think the public will see much difference."

Hattabaugh will earn $190,000 as interim superintendent, which is about a $20,000 raise.

The CMS board will discuss their goals for the permanent superintendent position next month.

Tuesday night was Gorman's last board meeting. Some board members praised Gorman's leadership in helping the district close the achievement gap and increase the graduation rate.

Others commended on how Gorman ran the district like a business and helped heal a divided community when he took over in 2006.

"I do thank you for your service these past five years and I do say that there's no one who can doubt you put the 24/7 into that job," said CMS board member Kaye McGarry.

"We educate more kids today and we educate them better today then ever before," said CMS board member Coach Joe White.

Before he officially exits as superintendent this week, the school board asked Gorman to write up a final report outlining ideas and goals for the district in the future.
