RALEIGH – Wake County School Administrators held their first series of informational meetings focused on new student assignment plans.

Superintendent Tony Tata and his Student Assignment Task Force unveiled two plans, the blue and green plan last week and posted them online. The task force had come up with nine plans and narrowed it down to those two.

Meetings were held Tuesday night at Enloe, Millbrook Magnet and Athens Drive High Schools. The audience was small at Athens Drive High School, but there was plenty of feedback from parents. Student Assignment Task Force Leader James Overman led the meeting.

The blue plan, or the community-based choice plan, lets parents choose from a variety of elementary schools which are linked with middle and high schools.

The green plan is closer to what's currently in place, and student are assigned to schools based on nodes or where they live.

Yuri Yamamoto has six children and is examining each plan carefully.

"My biggest concern is the magnet schools," she said. "That's where pretty much all my students have gone to as a base school or a magnet school."

Overman says the plans are not yet complete, but many parents pushed for more details.

"We've had a lot of parents here tonight, and we've received thousands of emails from parents who are concerned about not enough detail," said Yvonne Brannon with the Great Schools in Wake Coalition. "They want to know what happens at middle and high school. They want to know what happens with transfers. They want to know what happens in terms of capping schools."

Overman says the school system has already gotten hundreds of online comments.

"To me, the feedback is extremely important because this is who is going to be impacted on a daily basis, and so it's just vital for us to get feedback from the parents," he said.

Another informational meeting will take place Wednesday at Panther Creek High School. Thursday, meetings will be held at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School, Garner Magnet High School, Sanderson High School, Cary High School and Holly Springs High School.

Comments will be accepted until June 12. Administrators hope to have a new plan in place for the 2012-2013 school year.
